![]() ![]() Rotating sheep into different paddocks keeps them on fresh pasture. You use electric net fencing for temporary paddocks. The best type of fence for sheep is a smooth-wire electric or woven wire non-electric fencing. Salt can be offered in granulated or loose form. Like other ruminants, sheep need salt to prevent bloating. Mineral mixtures for other animals may contain heavy levels of copper, which can be toxic to sheep. Vitamins and mineral supplements should be formulated especially for sheep. Sheep require more protein than other grazing animals, and where pasture grasses are poor or not plentiful enough to provide this, grain supplements provide necessary nutrients. Ewes who are about to lamb, or sheep you are raising for market, will benefit from supplements of grain. Make sure to use a raised feeder rather than putting the hay on the ground, where it will get wet and dirty. While the pasture grass is growing, sheep can feed themselves without supplements, but in the winter or if there is a drought, you will need to supplement their diet with hay and/or grain. In general, one acre of good quality pasture can support four sheep. Pastures for sheep can include a mixture of grasses, brush, and trees. They can thrive quite nicely if they are fed nothing but good pasture grasses, salt, a vitamin and mineral supplement, and fresh water. Sheep are ruminant animals, which means they eat predominantly plants such fresh grass and hay. Having a vet inspect any sheep you want to purchase can help you choose the best sheep.
![]() ![]() ![]() The fact that it has no pictures cuts your expectations off at the knees. I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect going into this book. Every page of The Book with No Pictures is a wild ride of parents telling their children about a friendly hippo named Boo Boo Butt or blueberry pizza. In a Boston Globe interview with Kate Tuttle, Novak says, “What’s the kind of book, what would be the kids’ dream book? And I thought that it would be a book that would get the grownups to say ridiculous things they didn’t want to say.” Kate Tuttle notes that, “The result was The Book with No Pictures, a perfectly-pitched tool for parental humiliation and childish glee.” As such, The Book with No Pictures is exactly what Novak claims: a book that uses language and typography to create a wacky story that children love to listen to. This book stands out from the traditional children’s book for the obvious reason that it has, well, no pictures. ![]() Novak, who plays Ryan on the show and is also a writer, director, and executive producer, actually released a picture book in 2014 titled, The Book With No Pictures (Dial Books). When someone thinks of the seminal television series, NBC’s The Office, lots of things come to mind, but probably not the phrase, I think these guys should make a children’s book. Which begs some key questions: Why would someone famous break from their usual routine to write a book for kids? And how do these books stand up against their non-celebrity-based counterparts? Celebrities are, by definition, some of the most viewed and talked about members of our society-and sometimes they leave their normal professions and write books for kids. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Despite the dangers, all the members of the Halley armada had survived. In total the two Vega spacecraft returned a total of 1,500 images and a mountain of other data on Comet Halley. Vega 2 had several instruments lost or partially disabled during the encounter and lost 80% of the power from the solar panels, although this was later revised to only a 50% loss. Although the main processor controlling the scan platform failed 32 minutes before closet approach (forcing a switch to a less capable backup system), Vega 2 survived its 76.8 kilometer-per-second (47.7 miles-per-second) encounter with Halley at 7:20:00 UT on March 9 at a range of just 8,030 kilometers (4,990 miles). Its path through Halley’s coma afforded a less obscured view of the nucleus compared to Vega 1. Just 18 hours later, Vega 2 made its dangerous plunge towards the nucleus. It passed at a much safer range of 151,000 kilometers (93,800 miles) at 13:06 UT on March 8 where it secured useful data on the properties of the comet’s extended cloud of hydrogen. Next up was the Japanese Suisei, which had been observing Comet Halley with its UV imager since mid-November 1985. Vega 1 survived the dangerous encounter and successfully transmitted about 800 images and other data, but two instruments had been disabled and the output from the unprotected solar arrays was cut by 55%. Near closest approach Vega 1 was pummeled by up to 4,000 dust particles each second as it returned ghostly images of the 15-kilometer-long (9-mile-long) peanut-shaped nucleus. It passed 8,890 kilometers (5,525 miles) from Halley’s nucleus at a relative velocity of 79.2 kilometers per second (49.2 miles per second) at 7:20:06 UT on March 6, 1986. The first of the international armada to reach Comet Halley was the Soviet’s Vega 1. A course correction on November 14 moved Suisei’s aim point to about 151,000 kilometers (93,800 miles) on the sunward side of Halley’s nucleus. The launch of the Mu-3SII proved to be so accurate with a miss distance of only 210,000 kilometers (131,000 miles) that a course correction planned for August 22 was cancelled. It was successfully launched on Augand subsequently renamed Suisei (Japanese for “comet”). The last dedicated mission to be sent to Comet Halley was the Japanese Planet-A probe. The first course correction was made on August 26 to move Gitto’s initial aim point to within 4,000 kilometers (2,500 miles) of Halley’s nucleus. After spending 32 hours in a 198.5 by 32,000 kilometer (123.4 by 19,900 mile) parking orbit inclined 7 degrees to the equator, Giotto’s MAGE 1S kick motor ignited for a 55-second burn to send the probe into solar orbit. It was launched from Kourou in French Guiana on July 2, 1985, on Flight V14 of the Ariane. The next mission off the pad was the European Giotto mission. The success of this technology demonstrator paved the way for the launch of Planet-A later that summer. After a series of engineering tests, all of Sakigake’s instruments were turned on by the end of February 1985. Course corrections performed on January 10 and February 14 decreased the miss distance to about 7 million kilometers (4.4 million miles). As a result, the miss distance from Comet Halley had been increased by almost 3 million kilometers (2 million miles). The launch had been delayed for three days because of ground equipment problems. After it was successfully launched on a direct-ascent trajectory into interplanetary space, MS-T5 was renamed Sakigake (“Pioneer” in Japanese). Next out of the gate was the Japanese MS-T5 mission launched from the Kagoshima Space Center on January 7, 1985. ![]() With their missions at Venus successfully completed, the two Vega spacecraft were on their way to encounter Comet Halley in nine months. Four days later Vega 2 passed 24,500 kilometers (15,200 miles) from Venus while its lander also successfully deployed a balloon as it descended to a nighttime landing 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) southeast of Vega 1 in Aphrodite Terra. As Vega 1 passed 39,000 kilometers (24,200 miles) from Venus, the lander successfully deployed the Soviet balloon payload in the Venusian atmosphere on its way to a landing on Raskala Planitia near local midnight. Vega 1 reached Venus first on June 11, 1985. Vega 1 and 2 were launched from the Baikonour Cosmodrome in Soviet Kazakhstan at the end of 1984 using a pair of Proton 8K82K rockets on December 15 and 21, respectively. In the revolutionary year of 1848, the French people, disgusted with monarchical corruption on behalf of special-interests, forced their king from power. He served as secretary-general and editor of the weekly newspaper, Le Libre Échange ( Free Trade). In 1846 he organized the French Free Trade Association in Bordeaux, before moving to Paris where he organized the free-trade effort on a national scale. Other works, including Cobden and the League (1845) 4 and Capital and Rent (published in 1849), 5 have not been translated.īastiat was an activist as well as an author. In 1850, as his life was nearing an end, Bastiat published The Law, 2 his eloquent foray into political and legal philosophy, and Economic Harmonies, 3 his treatise on political economy. Two series of those essays were compiled under the title Economic Sophisms (1845), 1 a bestseller that went through many editions and was translated into several languages. Thus began his brief torrent of essays and pamphlets deftly exploding the economic fallacies of his day. Bastiat first garnered attention with “The Influence of French and English Tariffs on the Future of the Two Peoples,” published in the Journal des Économistes. In 1844 he began his brief writing career, stimulated by the free-trade efforts of Richard Cobden (who would become his close friend) and the Anti-Corn Law League in England. The multilingual Bastiat devoured the works of political economists from throughout Europe, with the deepest impressions left by Say, Adam Smith, Destutt de Tracy, and Charles Comte. As a young man, he chose the study of economics over business and farming. Orphaned at 9, he came of age during the Napoleonic wars, with their extensive government intervention in economic affairs. The fruits of the creativity thus forgone are “what is not seen” in any act of intervention.Ĭlaude Frédéric Bastiat was born in the southwestern French port city of Bayonne. ![]() The only time I run into stumbling blocks is when login pages change subtly - for instance, Facebook's login page now requires multiple TABs to get from "username" to "password", even though it hasn't changed visually. ![]() No browser extensions needed.įor the vast majority of web sites, select the "username" field with the mouse if it's not already selected, and use the key combination "username" (tab) "password" (enter).įor a few sites, particularly where entering the username moves you to a new screen, it might need to be "username" (enter) (pause 5 seconds) "password" (enter) but you should be able to work it out. If you can navigate the input-fields of a login page with the keyboard, you can set Keepass to auto-fill that form and log in. Keepass works perfectly with any browser I try (including Vivaldi and even non-browser programs such as SSH in a terminal), using its "autotype" feature. With Myki, I keep wondering, what happens if I delete the app or move to another phone without making a backup, or what if my phone number gets stolen and I can't authenticate anymore? I'm sure there are answers to those questions - or at least they're on the roadmap for the service - but I'm not 100% willing to give it my trust just yet, especially when there's some obscurity regarding these issues.Just to add my 0.02, I use Keepass 2 on both Windows 10 and several flavours of Linux. I've been using Enpass for several years and I know how it works, its features, and its shortcomings. Plus, I'd like more item categories for IDs and bank accounts, better backups and restores that don't nuke my shared items to the ground, an archive for old or unused items, and maybe the option to share a list of contacts or bookmarks (because Google and Android are silly enough to not let me do this easily).īut perhaps the one thing standing in my way of using Myki fulltime is that when it comes to password management, there's solace in the familiar. There's still a lack of feature parity with its iOS counterpart, though - I'm told this should be reached soon. Over the past months that I've dabbled in and out of Myki, the Android app has grown a lot, adding much needed features and becoming more and more usable with time. There are IAPs for custom tags, account images, profiles, and fields, costing $2.99 apiece or $9.99 total, but these are very specific features that I have yet to want badly enough to pay for them. The best part about Myki, however, is that it's free. There are also some delightful features like the direct import from Chrome, the beautiful 2FA integration, and the option to disconnect and log out of everything automatically when you end your browser session. And then there's Myki for teams, an aspect I haven't touched on because it requires your organization to sign up for the service. There's autofill on the browser and Android, integrated 2FA authentication, a password generator, a built-in audit for your old and reused passwords, backups/restores and exports, and multiple device support for Android is on the way. Most features you would expect from a good password manager have been implemented, even ones that afford you a convenience you would only expect from a cloud solution (sharing to other users, specifically). Myki does quite well with its self-imposed local/offline restriction. But with backups and exports available, I can rest just a little assured that things are safe in some other form. The mere thought of trusting something like this to a single file on my phone is, to be honest, terrifying. You should at least try it. The idea of having part of your identity tied to your phone number is scary, let alone an entire database of usernames, passwords, credit cards, and personal data. You can search through the list, which also works if you search for a tag (second screenshot below shows a search for the tag "home"), as well as multiple select items to delete or share them. ![]() The username (blurred in my screenshots) is displayed in grey below each one, to make it easy to differentiate multiple accounts on the same service. Passwords are sorted alphabetically by account name. I'm told more flexibility is coming soon, but you'll have to use the secure notes format to store that kind of information for now. Unfortunately, Myki doesn't yet support more granular types of items, like addresses, WiFi passwords, ID cards and passports, bank accounts, licenses, and others. ![]() It's the items section and comes with four upper tabs for passwords, 2-factor authentication, credit cards, and secure notes. Once inside, the Myki app has four important sections on the bottom, but the first one is where you'll probably spend most of your time. ![]() It contained nine large parishes, smaller parts of two others, and the township of Aspull in the parish of Wigan. The south east district became known as the Hundred of Salford, a division of land administered from Salford for military and judicial purposes. The area between the rivers Mersey and Ribble was divided into six smaller districts, referred to as "wapentakes", or hundreds. įollowing the emergence of the united Kingdom of England, Salford became a caput or central manor within a broad rural area in part held by the Kings of England, including Edward the Confessor. According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, Sealhford was part of the Kingdom of Northumbria until it was conquered in 923 by Edward the Elder. Angles settled in the region during the Early Middle Ages and gave the locality the name Sealhford, meaning "ford by the willows". The Danes later conquered the area and absorbed what was left of the Brigantes. The withdrawal of the Romans in AD 410 left the inhabitants at the mercy of the Saxons. Both the main Roman road to the north, from Mamucium to Ribchester, and a second road to the west, ran through what is now Salford, but few Roman artefacts have been found in the area. Salford was founded when the fort was completed in AD 79, and for over 300 years the Pax Romana brought peace to the area. Following the Roman conquest of Britain, General Agricola ordered the construction of a Roman fort named Mamucium (Manchester) to protect the routes to Deva Victrix ( Chester) and Eboracum ( York) from the Brigantes. With a stronghold at the sandstone outcrop on which Manchester Cathedral now stands, opposite Salford's original centre, their territory extended across the fertile lowland by the River Irwell that is now Salford and Stretford. The Brigantes were the major Celtic tribe in what is now Northern England. Other finds include a neolithic axe-hammer found near Mode Wheel, during the excavation of the Manchester Ship Canal in 1890, and a Bronze Age cremation urn during the construction of a road on the Broughton Hall estate in 1873. The raw material for such tools was scarce and unsuitable for working, and as a result they are not of the quality found elsewhere. The earliest known evidence of human activity in what is now Salford is provided by the Neolithic flint arrow-heads and workings discovered on Kersal Moor and the River Irwell, suggesting that the area was inhabited 7–10,000 years ago. ![]() The Hundred of Salford was a Royal Manor of Anglo-Saxon origin centred on the demesne of Salford. Salford is directly across the River Irwell opposite Manchester to the northwest and to the north of Old Trafford, southeast of Bolton and south of Bury. Salford's MediaCityUK became the headquarters of CBBC and BBC Sport in 2011, joined by ITV Granada in 2013. Salford is home to the University of Salford, and has seen several firsts, including the world's first free public library, and the first street to be lit by gas. Industries declined in the 20th century, causing economic depression, and Salford became a place of contrasts, with regenerated inner-city areas like Salford Quays next to some of the most socially deprived and violent areas in England. Salford became a major cotton and silk spinning and weaving factory town in the 18th and 19th centuries and important inland port on the Manchester Ship Canal from 1894. The Industrial Revolution of the late 18th and early 19th centuries reversed that relationship. It was granted a charter by Ranulf de Blondeville, 6th Earl of Chester, in about 1230, making Salford a free borough of greater cultural and commercial importance than its neighbour Manchester. Historically in Lancashire, Salford was the judicial seat of the ancient hundred of Salfordshire. In 1974 the wider Metropolitan Borough of the City of Salford was established with responsibility for a significantly larger region. The former County Borough of Salford, which also included Broughton, Pendleton and Kersal, was granted city status in 1926. Salford is located in a meander of the River Irwell which forms part of its boundary with Manchester. It is also the second and only other city in the county after neighbouring Manchester. ![]() In 2011, Salford had a population of 103,886. ![]() Salford ( / ˈ s ɒ l f ər d/) is a city and metropolitan borough in Greater Manchester, England. ![]() |
